Low Vision Rehabilitation

Adjustment to any vision loss is difficult. It takes self-acceptance, determination, support of family and friends, and learning new techniques to fully utilize any remaining vision. The goal of the Low Vision Services is to enable people with low vision to improve their ability to use their remaining vision so they can be independent and better able to meet the demands of everyday living.

What is Low Vision?

Low vision should not be confused with blindness. Low vision is partial sight that cannot be made clear by ordinary eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgery. Low vision can include a loss of visual acuity, inability to distinguish colors, see contrast, or determine spatial relationships among objects.

What is a Low Vision Exam?

A low vision examination differs from a “regular eye exam” because it evaluates the level of visual functioning and its effects on daily living activities. We evaluate the severity and nature of the vision loss and prescribe special optical devices to maximize remaining vision.

Dr. Miller is a low vision specialist and has been performing low vision evaluations for over 18 years. She can evaluate the degree of vision loss and prescribe appropriate low vision aids such as magnifiers, telescopes and CCTV’s and train the patient to use them.

Just as important, Dr. Miller can provide referrals to local and state organizations that can help visually impaired patients cope with their vision loss.
